  • 12 mini onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Dipping sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut off about half an inch from the top of each mini onion and peel away their outer layers.
  2. Place the onions root-side up on a cutting board and slice downwards in four sections without cutting all the way through.
  3. In a large bowl, combine one cup of all-purpose flour, half a cup of cornstarch, two teaspoons of paprika, half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and one teaspoon of baking powder.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients well until evenly distributed.
  5. Pour one cup of buttermilk over the prepared mini onions in another bowl.
  6. Let the mini onions soak in buttermilk for about 10 minutes.
  7. Remove each onion from the buttermilk bath one at a time and gently shake off any excess liquid before dipping them in the flour mixture.

Notes

Storage: Store any leftover crispy mini blooming onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To maintain their crispiness, place a paper towel at the bottom of the container to absorb excess moisture.

Reheating: To reheat the mini onions and keep them crispy, place them back in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are heated through and regain their crunchiness. Avoid using the microwave, as it may make them soggy.
